The Last Word

The presentday Boadicea who founded our east coast group of freedom fighters was the first to realise that Britain needs a Voters Revolt to save our democracy.  It is appropriate that she should have the last word to explain in her own inimitable way why it is so important for the Revolt to succeed... ...

"The citizen can bring our political and governmental institutions back to life, make them responsive and accountable, and keep them honest. No one else can." 

So wrote John Gardner, a great American.  His passion was democracy. He understood that secrecy and the lack of citizen involvement were threats to democratic institutions.  With this in mind, he created a people's pressure group to hold governments accountable.  At its height, the organisation had more than 300,000 members.  A great campaign.

You will be amazed how many campaigns there are in this country.  Just try typing 'campaign' into Google.  The British public are undoubtedly disillusioned with the political process, but we are certainly not apathetic about other things. We care deeply and passionately about a whole range of issues - from wind farms, waste incinerators and primary school closures, to Council tax and the Iraq war. The Great British Campaign is alive and kicking!

I have run a local campaigning group for over three years now, so I understand the anger felt by thousands of campaign warriors - whatever the cause they are fighting for.  They, like me, will have come to hate the powerful implacable State forces we all find ranged against us.

Trying to get heard nowadays is a difficult frustrating exercise. There is never enough time, enough help and never ever enough money.  The whole community may appear to agree with your viewpoint.  Your cause may be so NOBLE and so RIGHT.  But if it doesn't fit in with the plans of the Powers-that-Be, they will contemptuously ignore you and steamroller ahead anyway with their already-decided plans.  

Often your Councillors no longer have the power to help you.  All too often, MPs are too concerned with their standing within their Party - too scared of their Whip - to lift a finger in defence of your cause.

It is an indictment of our political establishment's scandalous treatment of democracy that this Voters Revolt web site has had to be created at all.  In a properly functioning representative democracy, we wouldn't need such a site.  That is why I support its ethos. 

I want to be LISTENED TO again!  I want my views to COUNT!  I want our DEMOCRACY back!

I could not sleep with a clear conscience if I had not done everything in my power to defend my grandchildren's right to live in a free democracy.

I know it wasn't perfect, but fifty years ago ours was a pretty good system, the envy of the world.   We must get back to that and then make it even better than it ever was in the past.

This web site explains how our democracy has been eroded and undermined.  It also offers a remedy.
